Former President Biden is defending his use of the autopen in the face of stiff criticism from Donald Trump. When it comes to the pardons and commutations he granted toward the end of his term, Biden said he “made every single one of those” decisions. He told The New York Times that he did not personally sign the paperwork and approved use of an autopen device because there were several thousand warrants. Biden argued that use of the autopen is legal and said President Trump and other GOP critics are lying when they claim he was incapacitated and that his aides misused the autopen.

The Supreme Court is allowing President Donald Trump to put his plan to dismantle the Education Department back on track and go through with laying off nearly 1,400 employees. With the three liberal justices in dissent, the court on Monday paused an order from U.S. District Judge Myong Joun in Boston, who issued a preliminary injunction reversing the layoffs and calling into question the broader plan. The layoffs “will likely cripple the department,” Joun wrote. A federal appeals court refused to put the order on hold while the administration appealed.
A wildfire on the Grand Canyon’s North Rim has destroyed the historic Grand Canyon Lodge and other structures. The fire was sparked by lightning on July 4 and grew rapidly due to high winds and dry conditions. Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs has called for a federal investigation into the National Park Service’s decision to initially manage the fire as a controlled burn. Officials have closed the North Rim for the rest of the year, evacuating hikers and rerouting rafters. No injuries have been reported, but up to 80 structures were lost. Firefighters continue battling multiple wildfires across the western U.S.
A new onslaught of flash floods has torn through Central Texas, leading to the evacuation of thousands of residents as the death toll climbs to 132. Heavy rain in already devastated regions was the cause of these most recent flash floods, triggering renewed rescue efforts. Kerr County, a region greatly affected by the devastating July 4 flash floods, had rescue operations temporarily halted amid safety concerns. Texas Governor Greg Abbott confirmed rescue operations were underway in the state's most at-risk regions, including San Saba County, which experienced nine inches of rainfall. Abbott later said in a social media post that dozens have already been rescued in the areas surrounding the Lampasas River, which surged by 23ft in under four hours. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has faced criticism after reports that she held up flood response times with her restrictive new FEMA directives. Noem defended her department, saying, “Within just an hour or two after the flooding, we had resources from the Department of Homeland Security there”.

President Donald Trump says he'll punish Russia with tariffs if there isn’t a deal to end the war in Ukraine within 50 days. The Republican president made the announcement on Monday during an Oval Office meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. Trump did not provide specifics on how the tariffs would be implemented. Trump made quickly stopping the war one of his diplomatic priorities and has increasingly expressed frustration about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s unbudging stance on U.S-led peace efforts. Trump’s special envoy to Ukraine and Russia has met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv. Zelenskyy says they had “a productive conversation.”
