The White House says President Donald Trump had a recent medical checkup after he noticed “mild swelling” in his legs. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt says tests by the White House medical unit showed “no evidence of deep vein thrombosis or arterial disease,” but that Trump has a condition called “chronic venous insufficiency." It's a fairly common condition in older adults when little valves inside the veins that normally help move blood against gravity up the legs gradually lose the ability to work properly. Leavitt also said bruising on Trump’s hand that’s been covered up by makeup is “consistent” with irritation from his “frequent handshaking and the use of aspirin.”
North Carolina has declared a state of emergency after Tropical Storm Chantal caused severe flooding and at least six deaths. Gov. Josh Stein announced the declaration Thursday, citing overwhelmed local response efforts. The storm, followed by more severe weather, dumped up to 12 inches of rain in some areas, causing rivers to reach record levels. Damage to water systems left some residents without safe drinking water. The emergency declaration, effective Wednesday, allows the state to seek federal aid for recovery. Emergency crews rescued dozens of people, but several were found dead, including people killed by floodwaters.
The World Health Organization releases its abortion numbers. 73 million. That’s how many abortions the WHO says took place all around the globe in 2024. 73 million is more than the population of the United Kingdom. It’s more than the population of France and twice the population of Poland. The WHO also reports that about 60% of unintended pregnancies result in abortion. Of course the WHO itself is one of the biggest promoters of abortion on the planet, pressuring pro-life countries to change their laws.
A powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of Alaska, triggering a tsunami warning for thousands of residents. The quake hit near the Shumagin Islands, shaking the Pacific and prompting sirens across coastal towns. Communities from Kennedy Entrance to Unimak Pass — including Kodiak Island and the Alaska Peninsula — are now on high alert. No tsunami has hit yet, but dangerous flooding and strong currents are possible. Stay tuned for updates and stay safe.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials will gain access to personally identifiable information for all of the nation’s 79 million Medicaid enrollees. That's according to an agreement obtained by The Associated Press. ICE officials plan to track immigrants who may not be living legally in the United States. The agreement was signed Monday between officials at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Department of Homeland Security. Direct access will be given to the addresses, Social Security numbers, birth dates as well as the ethnicity and race of all Medicaid enrollees.
The Justice Department has fired Maurene Comey, the daughter of former FBI director James Comey and a prosecutor in the federal cases against Sean “Diddy” Combs and Jeffrey Epstein, three people familiar with the matter told The Associated Press. There was no specific reason given for her firing from the U.S. attorney’s office in the Southern District of New York, according to one of the people. They spoke to the AP on the condition of anonymity to discuss personnel matters. Comey's termination comes shortly after she prosecuted Combs, who was acquitted of sex trafficking and racketeering charges. The rapper was convicted of lesser prostitution-related offenses.
Fresh off securing a plan to receive more U.S. weaponry, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appointed a new prime minister – the key negotiator of his country’s deal with the U.S. to partner on the development of minerals. By naming Yulia Svyrydenko, the former economy minister, to become the country’s first new head of government since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, Zelenskyy on Thursday elevated a loyal politician who has experience in diplomacy with the U.S. and other Western nations. The 39-year-old Svyrydenko has represented Ukraine in a wide range of high-level talks with Western partners, including on issues of defense and economic recovery and reconstruction. In 2022, she negotiated with other countries to impose sanctions on Russia.
