Clarence Woodward, 41, died Aug. 25, 2026, on Rikers Island after a medical emergency. He had been held without bail since August 2024, awaiting trial in the unprovoked stabbing of Jose Miranda at a Bronx laundromat. Miranda died; another man was wounded. Woodward, a homeless parolee released a month earlier, had 27–29 prior arrests and three state-prison terms. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he was “deeply saddened” by Woodward’s death and offered thoughts to the inmate’s family. Mamdani did not mention Woodward's victim, Jose Miranda.
