The New Rhodes

Rhodes does not particularly need help being beautiful.

This is an island with medieval walls, whitewashed villages, ridiculously blue water and enough history to casually mention that one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World once stood here.

So when somebody builds a new luxury resort on Rhodes, the question isn’t whether they can build a beautiful hotel.

It’s whether they can build one that actually feels like Rhodes.

The newly opened AMOH, a Luxury Collection Resort, appears to have understood the assignment. Set on a secluded peninsula near ancient Lindos, the resort incorporates locally sourced materials and Rhodian craftsmanship while looking straight out across the Mediterranean. Some rooms and suites add private pools to the equation.

And then there’s the ancient quarry.

Yes, the property has one.

Suddenly that gorgeous new resort isn’t merely sitting beside history. It’s sitting in it.

Come Hungry

This may be the part that gets me.

AMOH has six restaurants and four bars, but its strongest culinary idea isn’t simply offering guests lots of choices. It’s attempting to bring Rhodes onto the plate.

At Kymata, locally sourced seafood and seasonal produce become contemporary Greek cooking, with the day’s catch on display. At Lithos, Mediterranean dishes are served overlooking the ruins of that ancient quarry. There’s even an on-property garden producing vegetables that make their way onto the table.

And AMOH offers olive-oil tastings.

I’m in.

There’s also Greek pastry and artisanal ice cream at Oniro, an Italian restaurant overlooking the quarry, and a beach bar for that essential Greek-island ritual of sitting beside the Aegean and temporarily forgetting what day it is.

But Leave the Resort

This part matters.

You’re near Lindos.

Go.

Climb to its ancient Acropolis. Wander the narrow lanes beneath it. Find a taverna. Eat something whose English translation you’re only moderately certain about.

Then come back to AMOH.

That’s the appeal here.

Great resorts sometimes create beautiful bubbles that separate you from the destination you’ve traveled thousands of miles to experience.

AMOH has the potential to do the opposite.

The quarry, the food, the craftsmanship, the olive oil, the sea—they keep pointing you back toward the island itself.

Rhodes has been welcoming travelers for thousands of years.

AMOH is simply its newest front door.

And that’s a door I’d very much like to walk through.
