Sen. Padilla Says 'It's Time To Wake Up' After Forced Removal From Noem's Event

Sen. Alex Padilla on Tuesday encouraged Americans to peacefully protest against President Donald Trump's administration and said it’s “it’s time to wake up” in his first extended remarks in the Senate since he was forcibly removed from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem's press conference in Los Angeles last week as he tried to speak up about immigration raids. In emotional remarks on Tuesday, Padilla, a California Democrat, recounted the altercation, in which security forced him out of the room and onto the ground after he tried to ask Noem a question. Padilla said that even though he was accompanied by a National Guardsman and an FBI agent, "I was pushed and pulled, struggled to maintain my balance” and ended up flat on his chest on the floor. “I was handcuffed and marched down a hallway repeatedly asking, ‘Why I am being detained?’” Padilla said as several of his colleagues from both major political parties sat in their chairs and listened. “Not once did they tell me why.” He said he wondered in the moment if he was being arrested — he wasn't — and, if he was, what the city and his family would think. “What will a city already on edge from being militarized think when they see their U.S. senator being handcuffed for just trying to ask a question?” Padilla said. In a statement afterward, the Department of Homeland Security said that Padilla “chose disrespectful political theater” and that the Secret Service “thought he was an attacker.” The statement claimed erroneously that Padilla did not identify himself — he did, as he was being pushed from the room. “Padilla was told repeatedly to back away and did not comply with officers’ repeated commands,” the statement said, adding that officers acted appropriately. Padilla said he attended the press conference amid the immigration raids that have led to protests in California and around the country and as the Republican president sent military troops to his state. He said he spoke up after he heard Noem say that they wanted to “liberate” Los Angeles from Mayor Karen Bass and California Gov. Gavin Newsom, both Democrats. “Let that fundamentally un-American mission statement sink in,” Padilla said. Padilla and his angry Democratic colleagues have framed the episode as intimidation by the Trump administration, especially as it came days after Democratic Rep. LaMonica McIver was indicted on federal charges alleging she assaulted and interfered with immigration officers outside a detention center in New Jersey while Newark’s Democratic mayor, Ras Baraka, was being arrested after he tried to join a congressional oversight visit at the facility. Padilla encouraged Americans to speak out. “No one is coming to save us but us,” Padilla said. “And we know that the cameras are not in every corner of the country. But if this administration is this afraid of just one senator with a question, colleagues, imagine what the voices of tens of millions of Americans peacefully protesting can do.”

'Devil In The Ozarks' Pleads Not Guilty To A Prison Escape Charge

A convicted murderer and former police chief known as the “Devil in the Ozarks" pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a charge stemming from his recent escape from an Arkansas prison. Grant Hardin, who was captured June 6, appeared at the hearing via video. He pleaded not guilty to second-degree escape, was found to be indigent and was appointed a public defender. Hardin was captured 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) northwest of the Calico Rock prison from which he escaped on May 25. Authorities said he escaped by donning an outfit designed to look like a law enforcement uniform. After his capture, Hardin was transferred to a maximum security prison in Varner, a small community about 65 miles (124 kilometers) southeast of Little Rock.

Los Angeles Mayor Lifts Downtown Curfew Amid Immigration Raid Protests

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass is lifting a curfew in downtown Los Angeles. Her Tuesday announcement comes after she first imposed the curfew June 10 in response to clashes with police and vandalism amid protests against President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown in the city. Bass, a Democrat, said she’s lifting the curfew following “successful crime prevention and suppression efforts.” On Monday she trimmed back the hours after fewer arrests during evening demonstrations. She says the curfew protected stores, restaurants, businesses and residents from people engaging in vandalism.

U.S. And U.K. Sign Trade Deal To Slash Tariffs

U.S. President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer say they have signed a trade deal that will slash tariffs on U.K. auto and aerospace industry imports, but they are still discussing how to handle steel production. The pair spoke to reporters Monday at the Group of Seven summit. Trump brandished the pages of what he said was the long-awaited agreement but then dropped them. He also at first said the United States had reached an agreement with the European Union when he meant the United Kingdom. The U.S. president nonetheless insisted the pact would “produce a lot of jobs, a lot of income.”

NYC Comptroller Arrested Outside Immigration Court

New York City comptroller and Democratic mayoral candidate Brad Lander has been arrested at a federal building in Manhattan as he was trying to accompany a person out of an immigration courtroom. A reporter with The Associated Press witnessed Lander’s arrest on Tuesday. The person Lander was walking out of the courtroom was also arrested. Lander had spent the morning observing immigration court hearings and told an AP reporter that he was there to “accompany” some immigrants out of the building. Emailed inquiries to the FBI and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement were not immediately returned.

Officials Arrest 1 Of 2 Detainees Still Missing From New Jersey Immigration Facility

One of the two detainees still missing after escaping from a New Jersey federal immigration detention center has been arrested, the FBI said Tuesday. Franklin Norberto Bautista-Reyes, from Honduras, has been taken into custody, FBI spokesperson Amy Thoreson said in an email. Andres Felipe Pineda-Mogollon, from Colombia, is still missing from Thursday night's escape, the bureau said. Bautista-Reyes and Pineda-Mogollon and two other men busted out of the Delaney Hall detention center in Newark during reports of disorder there by breaking through a wall and escaping from a parking lot, according to U.S. Sen. Andy Kim, a New Jersey Democrat, and Homeland Security officials. All four men were in the country illegally and had been charged by local police in New Jersey and New York City, federal officials said. Bautista-Reyes was charged in May with aggravated assault, attempt to cause bodily injury, terroristic threats and a weapon crime. Pineda-Mogollon, from Colombia, was charged with minor larceny and burglary crimes. The details surrounding Bautista-Reyes' capture were not immediately clear. Messages seeking information were sent to the FBI and the Homeland Security Department, which oversees Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The FBI on Monday had increased the reward for information leading to their arrest to $25,000 from $10,000. Joel Enrique Sandoval-Lopez, one of the other fugitives, was taken into custody in Passaic, New Jersey, on Friday, the day after the escape in nearby Newark. Then, on Sunday, Joan Sebastian Castaneda-Lozada surrendered to federal authorities in Milleville, New Jersey. Sandoval-Lopez, from Honduras, was charged with unlawful possession of a handgun in October and aggravated assault in February, officials said. Castaneda-Lozada, from Colombia, was charged with burglary, theft and conspiracy, authorities said. A message seeking comment on behalf of the men was left Tuesday with the New Jersey public defender's office. It's unclear who may be representing the men. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, a Democrat who’s been critical of President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown, cited reports of a possible uprising and escape after disorder broke out at the facility Thursday night and protesters outside the center locked arms and pushed against barricades as vehicles passed through gates. Much is still unclear about what unfolded there. But GEO Group, the company that owns and operates the detention facility for the federal government, said in a statement that there was “no widespread unrest” at the facility. Delaney Hall has been the site of clashes this year between Democratic officials who say the facility needs more oversight and the Trump administration and those who run the facility. Baraka was arrested May 9, handcuffed and charged with trespassing. The charge was later dropped and U.S. Democratic Rep. LaMonica McIver was later charged with assaulting federal officers stemming from a skirmish that happened outside the facility. She has denied the charges.

Trump Calls for a 'Real End’ to the Conflict Between Israel and Iran

In the span of about eight hours, President Donald Trump went from suggesting a nuclear deal with Iran remained “achievable” to urging Tehran’s 9.5 million residents to flee for their lives as he cut his visit to the international G7 summit short to return to Washington for urgent talks with his national security team. Trump expressed frustration with Iranian leaders for failing to reach an agreement, adding that he wants “a real end” to the conflict.
