A tsunami hit coastal areas of Russia’s Kuril Islands, Japan and Hawaii and Alaska after a powerful, 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Russia early Wednesday. Warnings are also in place for Alaska and other coasts south toward New Zealand. The Japan Meteorological Agency said a tsunami as high as 60 centimeters (2 feet) had been detected as the waves moved south along the Pacific coast from Hokkaido to Tokyo Bay. Officials urged caution, saying that bigger waves could come later. Damage and evacuations were reported in the Russian regions nearest the quake’s epicenter on the Kamchatka Peninsula and officials declared a state of emergency in several areas.

The Kremlin said on Tuesday that it had “taken note” of a statement by U.S. President Donald Trump that he was shortening his deadline for Moscow to sign up to a ceasefire in Ukraine or face sanctions.
Trump set a new deadline on Monday of 10 or 12 days for Russia to make progress toward ending the war in Ukraine or face consequences, underscoring frustration with President Vladimir Putin over the 3-1/2-year-old conflict.
Asked about Trump’s statement on Tuesday during a conference call with reporters, the Kremlin kept its remarks short.
“We have taken note of President Trump’s statement yesterday. The special military operation continues,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, employing the term that Moscow uses for its war effort in Ukraine.
“We remain committed to a peace process to resolve the conflict around Ukraine and to ensure our interests in the course of this settlement.”
Trump threatened on July 14 to impose new sanctions on Russia and buyers of its exports within 50 days, a deadline which would have expired in early September.
But on Monday, during a visit to Britain, he shortened that deadline and said:
“There’s no reason in waiting… We just don’t see any progress being made.”
Trump, who has held half a dozen calls with the Kremlin leader since returning to the White House in January, also said he was “not so interested in talking any more”.
Peskov declined to comment on that remark.

Police say a gunman who killed four people in a Manhattan skyscraper before taking his own life claimed to have a brain disease linked to contact sports and was trying to target the National Football League’s headquarters in the building. New York City Mayor Eric Adams says investigators believe the gunman wanted to get up to the NFL's offices on Monday but entered the wrong elevator. Police say Shane Tamura, a Las Vegas casino worker, had a note in his wallet that suggested he had a grievance against the NFL and asked that his brain be studied. He played high school football in California but never played in the NFL. Among those killed was an off-duty police officer working security.
Gaza's population is facing the “worst-case scenario of famine" and “widespread death” will occur without immediate action, the leading international authority on food crises has warned. Tuesday's alert by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification — which is still short of a formal famine declaration — follows an outcry over images of emaciated children in Gaza after nearly 22 months of war. The IPC said Gaza has teetered on the brink of famine for two years, but recent developments, including “increasingly stringent blockades” by Israel, have “dramatically worsened” the situation.
Arkansas police say the killer of a married couple who had been hiking the remote Devil’s Den State Park with their young daughters was likely injured during the weekend attack. Arkansas State Police late Monday night also released a sketch drawing of a man wanted for questioning. Authorities have not provided a possible motive or elaborated on how 43-year-old Clinton David Brink and 41-year-old Cristen Amanda Brink were killed. Authorities say their daughters, who are 7 and 9, were not hurt and are being cared for by family members.
President Donald Trump said on Monday (July 28) he "never had the privilege" of visiting Jeffrey Epstein's island, saying he turned down an invitation from the convicted sex offender in what the president called a moment of good judgment.
"And by the way, I never went to the island. And Bill Clinton went there supposedly 28 times. I never went to the island but Larry Summers, I hear went there. He was the head of Harvard. And many of the people that are very big people, nobody ever talks about them. I never had the privilege of going to his island. And I did turn it down. But a lot of people in Palm Beach were invited to his island. In one of my very good moments, I turned it down. I didn't want to go to his island," Trump told reporters.
Trump's remarks were his latest effort to distance himself from the political furor over his administration's handling of files related to Epstein's case and renewed questions over his past relationship with the disgraced financier, who died by suicide in a New York jail in 2019.
Epstein owned a private island in the U.S. Virgin Islands where he entertained prominent people from politics, business and entertainment. Prosecutors have alleged he used the compound to conceal the sex trafficking and abuse of under-age victims.
Trump, who socialized with Epstein in the 1990s and early 2000s, also offered new insight into why their relationship ended. The president said he cut ties after Epstein attempted to recruit staff who worked for Trump.
Last week, White House communications director Steven Cheung said Trump had cut ties with Epstein because he regarded him as a "creep."
Trump flew with Epstein aboard his plane at least six times, according to logs for flights spanning from 1991 through 2005. None of those trips were to Epstein's private island.
Trump has denied ever being on the plane and has not been accused of any wrongdoing.
