Israel Plans to Retake Gaza City, Escalating the War With Hamas and Fueling Worries for Hostages

Israel says it plans to take over Gaza City. The decision to escalate its 22-month war with Hamas drew a dismissal from the militant group, renewed international calls to end the conflict and stirred fears for hostages still in Gaza. Israel’s air and ground war has already killed tens of thousands of people in Gaza, destroyed vast areas and pushed the territory toward famine. The timing of another major ground operation remains unclear but will almost certainly exacerbate the humanitarian catastrophe. Meanwhile, two Arab officials told the Associated Press that mediators from Egypt and Qatar are working on a new framework that will include the release of all hostages in one go in return for an end of the war in Gaza and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the strip.

Judge Halts Construction At Florida's 'Alligator Alcatraz'

A federal judge has ordered a two-week halt to construction at an immigrant detention center in the Florida Everglades dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz” as she considers whether it violates environmental laws. The facility was quickly built two months ago at a lightly used, single-runway training airport and can hold up to 3,000 detainees in temporary tent structures. The facility was continuing to be built out, but Thursday's order by U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams temporarily bars any new filling, paving or infrastructure. The order doesn’t include any restrictions on law enforcement or immigration enforcement activity at the center. Williams issued the temporary restraining order during a hearing and said she would issue a written order later Thursday.

U.S. Air Force Denies Transgender Service Members Retirement Pay

The U.S. Air Force has decided to deny early retirement options for transgender service members with 15 to 18 years of service. Instead, they are being separated without retirement benefits. This decision means transgender service members must choose between a lump-sum separation payment or leaving the service without benefits. An Air Force spokesperson confirmed that no exceptions to this policy were approved, despite previous notifications to some members. All transgender members are being separated under the Trump administration's policies.

2 Die From Helicopter Crash In Mississippi River

Two people died when a helicopter crashed into a barge in the Mississippi River near East Alton, Illinois, on Thursday, the Federal Aviation Administration said. Cpl. Dallas Thompson of the Missouri State Highway Patrol confirmed that the two inside the aircraft were killed and that there were no other reported injuries. The state patrol said no one was on the barge when the crash happened. The river has been closed to commercial navigation. The helicopter ran into a powerline and crashed around 11 a.m. Thursday on the Mississippi River about a half-mile downriver from the Alton Dam, said Rivers Pointe Fire District Chief Rick Pender. Fire, emergency medical and law enforcement personnel responded to the crash. Federal agencies are on the way, Pender said. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash. Video provided to KMOV-TV by a witness shows a black plume of smoke rising up from the barge. East Alton is about 20 miles (32 kilometers) north of St. Louis.

Netanyahu: Israel plans to take over Gaza to destroy Hamas

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says that to destroy Hamas Israel intends to take full control of the Gaza Strip. He said Israel would eventually transfer Gaza's administration to friendly Arab forces, as the Security Cabinet discussed a widening of its 22-month offensive. Asked in an interview with Fox News if Israel would “take control of all of Gaza,” Netanyahu replied: “We intend to, in order to assure our security, remove Hamas there, enable the population to be free of Gaza.” The Security Cabinet would still need to approve such a decision. Hospitals in Gaza meanwhile said at least 42 Palestinians were killed in Israeli airstrikes and shootings.

2 Pennsylvania State Troopers Have Been Shot

Two Pennsylvania State Police troopers were shot Thursday morning, Gov. Josh Shapiro said at an event outside Philadelphia. “About an hour ago in Susquehanna County, two state troopers were shot. Lori and I are praying for those troopers,” Shapiro said. “I want you to know I’ve communicated with Col. Paris. He is on the scene. It is an active situation and at the conclusion of this event I plan to head there myself.” Christopher Paris heads the Pennsylvania State Police. The shooting occurred in northeastern Pennsylvania. A state police spokesperson, Trooper Logan T. Brouse, said the location was along Route 171 near the village of Thomson. That’s about 40 miles (63 kilometers) north of Scranton. Sen. Dave McCormick said in a social media post that he was monitoring the developing situation. He also expressed empathy for the troopers who were shot. “Dina and I are praying for our brave state troopers in Susquehanna County and monitoring the situation closely as more details emerge,” McCormick posted. U.S. Rep. Rob Bresnahan said on X that he was “relieved to hear the troopers involved in today’s incident in Thompson Township are expected to be in stable condition.”

Texas Democrats Ask For Donations To Extend Redistricting Walkout

Texas Democratic lawmakers who left the state to block a Republican plan for congressional redistricting are pleading for donations to help cover their costs. Dozens of Democratic lawmakers have been camped out at a hotel outside Chicago. That's prevented the majority Republican Texas Legislatures from passing a plan sought by President Donald Trump to redraw more U.S. House districts in their party's favor before the 2026 elections. Texas House Democratic Caucus Chair Gene Wu says he's used money from his caucus to cover the hotel costs, and he paid for some smaller expenses with his own campaign account. Democrats also have been soliciting online donations.

Police Investigate Deadly Iowa Shooting, Explosion & Fire

A shooting and subsequent explosion and fire in a house in western Iowa left two people dead and a third critically injured, authorities said. Dispatchers on Wednesday night received reports of a shooting in Glenwood, a town of roughly 5,000 about 150 miles (241 kilometers) southwest of the Iowa capital of Des Moines. At least two people were shot in the home, Glenwood Police Chief Eric Johansen said in a Wednesday night news conference. An explosion shortly after the shootings led to a raging fire, Johansen said. A person of interest in the shootings and fire was taken into custody, the chief said. He would not say whether the person arrested was the one critically injured, adding that more information would be released by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, which is heading the investigation into the killings. Police have not released the names of those involved. A spokesperson with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation said the agency anticipated releasing more information later Thursday. “This has been determined to be an isolated incident and there is no further threat to the community,” Johansen said. The police chief said there was a history of law enforcement being called to the house, but he did not disclose the nature of those calls.
