Klay Thompson knocked down eight 3-pointers on the way to 30 points in the Warriors’ 110-96 victory over Memphis. Stephen Curry scored 29 with six 3s. Meanwhile, the Celtics are heading back to Boston for a Game 7 in their Eastern Conference semifinal series against the Milwaukee Bucks. Jayson Tatum furnished 46 points for the Celtics in a scoring duel with Giannis Antetokounmpo (YAH’-nihs an-teh-toh-KOON’-poh), who finished with 44 points, 20 rebounds and six assists. Jaylen Brown scored 22 and Marcus Smart had 21 for Boston. Game 7 is tomorrow afternoon.
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Authorities say 20 people were injured in two shootings in downtown Milwaukee near an entertainment district where thousands of people were watching the Bucks play the Celtics. None of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening. The first shooting last night occurred adjacent to the Deer District, an entertainment district with numerous bars and restaurants. The Milwaukee Fire Department said authorities took two people to a hospital, a 30-year-old man and a 16-year-old girl, and a third person drove to a hospital. Police said a 29-year-old man is in custody. The second shooting involving 17 victims occurred about two hours later and several blocks away.
UNDATED (AP) — The Florida Panthers are moving to the second round of the NHL’s Stanley Cup playoffs. They reached the Eastern Conference semifinals with a 4-3 overtime win over the Washington Capitals last night in Game 6. But the Pittsburgh Penguins and Calgary Flames weren’t as lucky. The Penguins head to New York for a Game 7 tomorrow after losing to the Rangers 5-3. Calgary will host Dallas in another Game 7 tomorrow after the Stars beat the Flames 4-2.
UNDATED (AP) — Phil Mickelson won’t be defending his title at the PGA Championship. He has withdrawn from the tournament at Southern Hills next week. Mickelson hasn’t been heard from for three months following his incendiary comments about a Saudi-funded rival league he supports and accusing the PGA Tour of being greedy. Mickelson made history last year when he won the PGA at at Kiawah Island, becoming golf’s oldest major champion at age 50. He is the first PGA champion not to defend since an injury kept Tiger Woods out in 2008.
UNDATED (AP) — China has withdrawn as host of soccer’s 2023 Asian Cup in the latest cancellation of the country’s sports hosting duties during the COVID-19 pandemic. The 24-nation tournament was due to be played in 10 cities in mostly newly built stadiums in June and July next year. China’s withdrawal could let Qatar or Saudi Arabia step up as hosts while both are bidding in a contest to host the 2027 edition.
