(The Center Square) – Two U.S. service members have been killed in action, and one remains missing following an Iranian missile strike in Jordan, U.S. Central Command announced Saturday afternoon.

An additional four U.S. service members were injured but have since been discharged from Jordanian hospitals, according to a statement from CENTCOM.

The latest casualties mark the deaths of sixteen service members killed since fighting with Iran began Feb. 28.

The deaths come as strikes against Iran continue to ramp up, with the U.S. targeting supply lines, missile and radar facilities, and a control tower in Iran, within close proximity to the Strait of Hormuz, in an effort to curb Irans aggression against commercial vessels transiting the vital waterway.

In retaliation, Iran has targeted Gulf neighbors housing U.S. bases, including Jordan, Kuwait, and Bahrain, headquarters of the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet.

CENTCOM stated that 50,000 American service members continue to operate across the region as the military continues to squeeze the Islamic Republic’s economy after President Donald Trump reinstated the complete naval blockade on Iranian ports, which the Trump administration estimates is costing the Iranian economy between $400 and $500 million a day.

The U.S. and Iran have seemingly returned to full-scale military operations after Trump declared the ceasefire over last week.

This is a developing story.
