We give to the Lord to honor and give thanks to Him. Everything we have in life is from Him, including salvation, a new life, and the ability to work to provide food, shelter, and clothing for ourselves and others. What we offer to Him comes from what He has graciously given.
So what are the big things you might not think about on a daily basis that you need to be saving for now? Here are five I think almost all of us will have to face at one time or another.
Don’t let money worries ruin the rest God wants to give you. This guide shows how thoughtful planning before, during, and after your trip can turn any vacation into a peaceful, debt-free experience.
Like all of us, churches have many bills. But that’s not the most important reason we give. Here are four simple thoughts on why Christians give money to the church.
The Lord didn’t tell His listeners not to pursue gaining wealth. But He did give them a caution not to make that a higher priority in life than obeying and serving God. In the same chapter, He pointed out a truth about human nature - “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
God is a cheerful giver Himself. He freely gives salvation to us through placing faith in Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:1-4; John 3:16-17).
Sometimes big purchases come up that we sometimes have to go into debt for. Your fifteen-year-old car sees its last leg. There is an enormous hole in the roof. Your decent, reliable car needs extensive repair. It has happened to everyone. Does this make you a bad Christian? No, I don’t think so. Sometimes debt is just something you have to do.
A clear call from the Lord to leave corporate America to be at home with my girls left me feeling unsure about how to engage in our family's budget. Would I completely lose all financial freedom now that I didn't have income-producing work?
Throughout the Bible, recompense has various meanings, some in a favorable sense and some in an unfavorable sense. This same word can be translated as repayment, benefit, compensation, retaliation, requital, or reward (among others).
In many senses, the church must run some aspects of her operation in terms of a business. How much should a church pay her pastor? How much should the church spend on Sunday School literature? Is it okay to go into debt? These are all questions to be considered by the church in light of its available financial resources. One must not act hastily without considering the cost and sacrifice required.
By living generously, freely giving from our finances to help others and spread the gospel, we will reap eternal rewards. The Bible teaches that we are stewards of our finances. Let us invest our money wisely for the glory of the Lord.
When we financially struggle, it's easy for money to consume our hearts, allowing fear and frustration to grow. When financially comfortable, it's easy to lean on money as the (false) sense of our joy.
