Lost…In Emotional Reaction Without Empathy

Gavin Newsom’s poll numbers are rising as he turns, not so slowly, into a troll – just taking 160-character swipes at pretty much anything Republican.  Democrats seem to be eating it up. It would be pathetic if it were not so consequential.

A person that I have not spoken to in 3 years, and barely knew then, has suddenly started to DM me, and its not pretty.  The DMs are all caps, yelling about the latest “outrage” of the Trump administration.  I never respond, but they keep coming.  This poor soul cannot help it.  So consumed by hatred of all things Trump, this individual feels compelled to shout at me – I guess because I am the closest thing known that is a public conservative.

From these observations come two comments.  Firstly rage and opposition is no way to win an election, and is a dangerous way to lead a nation.  Trump, his bluster, insults, and nicknames not withstanding has always had a plan – that is if you’re were willing to get past the bluster, insults and nicknames.  I can’t find that in the mess that is the current state of the Democratic Party.  All I can find is rage.  The rage is all consuming, and blinding.

That means that should they obtain office all they will be prepared to do is destroy.  This country is about building, not destroying.

The second comment has to do with simple humanity.  I wonder if my DMer has every wondered, even for a moment, why I did not send them all caps DMs when Obama or Biden acted in what I considered an outrageous fashion?  There were numerous times during those administrations when I was driven to my knees in prayer, but never once did I consider shouting at some liberal correspondent – why should I inflict my policy-based angst on them?  Not only would it have accomplished nothing, they just don’t need my emotional baggage.  I am quite certain they have enough of their own.  So intense is the emotional state of Democrats that they cannot begin to even imagine the emotional state of others – despite their claims of compassion.

This situation is deeply consequential – our system was built for competing ideas and an opposition party that is without ideas is hugely problematic.  Do you remember back in early July when Karen Bass beclowned herself about a show of force by ICE in MacArthur Park?  Among other things, she complained about ICE disturbing children practicing soccer.  Well, they got far more seriously disturbed when a body was dragged from the lake in that park yesterday.  Bass cared to oppose the Trump Administration, but apparently she does not care enough to police the park.  Void of action, she knows only reaction – and so another murder.

But on a deeper level I find myself saddened for these people – life consumed by outrage, void of empathy and and driven by a desperate need for catharsis is not a good life.  It is a life without genuine human connection.

The political victory, at least for now, won.  We have work to do on souls.  I for one do not know how to reach people this deeply entranced by their own emotional state.  But God does.  I pray, earnestly, that He can reach through their cloud of furor and calm their souls.  Firstly for their own good, but also for the good of the nation.
