Kansas Church Shares the Gospel Through Generous Donation to Commuters

College is expensive. From food and lodging to classes and tuition, the bills stack higher than the ceiling. At one local church in Kansas, however, sharing the Gospel looks like helping the next generation with these stressful expenses.

University United Methodist Church of Wichita, Kansas, has been stepping beyond the walls of the church by meeting those in a place they visit frequently: the gas station. Instead of donating funds to a college account for students, they’ve decided to give away 200 $20 gas cards to commuters in their area. Their goal is to offset the rising cost of fuel while displaying a tangible expression of the Gospel’s care in the community.

Hosting a “Love at the Pump” event on Saturday, April 25, 2026, the church distributed 200 gift cards and offered to provide additional support through future donations. Church Pastor Yolanda White-Oliver expressed that while the main idea came from rising gas prices, the deeper desire was a mission to reconnect with those who’ve felt disconnected from the Church.

“We wanted to reach those who may no longer believe that the church is a reliable resource and to spread love in our community and overshadow negative news, to remind people that God is still on the throne and that people still care,” White-Oliver told The Christian Post.

Beyond money, White-Oliver and her team prayed with commuters getting gas, provided drinks and snacks, and collected donations prior to the event to further support its offerings. With no strings attached, the team didn’t collect any personal information about the customers.

Describing the outreach as “a means of just being the church and doing our best to ensure that ‘no one ever has to do life alone,' Love at the Pump “makes the Gospel visible.”

“Jesus met people in ordinary places and responded to real needs. He fed people, healed people, and paid attention to those who were often overlooked. This kind of moment at the pump follows that same pattern. It says, ‘God sees you. You matter. You are not alone.’”
