Ohio coroner resigning to take job in Washington

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A coroner in central Ohio who performed the autopsy on Cleveland kidnapper Ariel Castro will become deputy chief in the District of Columbia medical examiner's office.

The Columbus Dispatch (http://bit.ly/V8lwUr ) reports Franklin County Coroner Jan Gorniak says she plans to leave her current job in October for the Washington post.

The 46-year-old coroner and forensic pathologist worked to raise public awareness of issues including teen suicide. She also performed Castro's autopsy. He committed suicide in prison after pleading guilty to kidnapping and imprisoning three women for a decade, repeatedly raping and beating them.

The executive director of the Ohio State Coroners Association said Gorniak would have taken over as the association board's president in 2016.

The Democratic Party's central committee will appoint a replacement to complete her term through 2016.
